Hiking and Backpacking pulse of the world. Hiking topics worldwide in real time.
I have discovered Twitter to be an incredible networking, educational and marketing tool for any purpose. The simple uncluttered interface enabled me to find hikers by a location, name or hobby like hiking.
Via Twitter I have learned that hiking is called something different depending where you live. I have also been intrigued by viewing a twitter outdoor RSS feed and seeing a snapshot of what is happening in the outdoors anywhere in the world.
In New Zealand hiking is called Tramping.
In Australia when they go in the outback it is often called bushwalking or simply “going walkabout”.
In Europe if it is hiking you choose your are Trekking.
In the UK, believe it or not, they get real creative and call hiking…wait for it “walking”. hmmm who would of thought it?
In Asia, hiking as a simple way to pass a day or two does not seem to be as popular as it is in Europe and North America but there are still plenty of folks who go Trekking.
Trekking and Backpacking are the same thing, usually a multi-day hiking trip where you camp along the way. There are many backpacking routes worldwide. Many backpackers will complete a long trail in several trips but thru-hikers are backpackers who have the stamina and time to conquer long backpacking routes without stopping to go back to the real world. A famous route for thru-hikers in the US is the Appalachian Trail. In Canada, the Trans Canada Trail of course.
Through Twitter I have met outdoor enthusiasts world wide. Their interviews are coming in quite regularly now you can read more interesting stories of outdoor people that I have met on Twitter by checking out the latest hiker interviews here.
