We decided to try Black Crater, the mountain above Sisters along the McKenzie highway. Oregon 242 had just opened the week prior and thought the trailhead, newly accessible, would be a good place to start exploring.  From town the hike looks very doable. Just a bit of snow on the peak. But what we didn’t realize (along with the half dozen other hikers we encoutered) is that there is still ~3 feet of snow still on the trails.  Better wait till August for this one (2010).  Still got some great views and a few pictures are attached. What we missed by not getting to the summit were the wonderful views of North Sister.

I had been in Roanoke entirely too long to not have hiked this peak, so I finally grabbed a few of my buddies to ascend McAfee Knob with me on a cloudy and at times wet day.  The hike up was filled with good conversation and only a bit of rain.  The summit was cloudy to say the least.  There were absolutely no views down into the valley.  Thankfully, I was still able to get the money shot (ie most photographed spot on the AT photo), although I’ll have to go again to get the nice backdrop.  At the summit, we also met a 61 year old thru-hiker (trail name: Croft) who told us about her 700 mile trek, so far.  I’m excited to hopefully a few of the hikers as they come through Daleville this week.

The Maryville Daily Times is reporting that a 59-year-old Knoxville man died on the Bote Mountain Trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park yesterday. The victim, whose name is not being released pending notification of next of kin, collapsed after stopping to rest. He had been hiking with a friend, and appears to have died from natural causes. The victim had apparently been experiencing breathing problems throughout the day. The friend went for help, encountering other hikers, one of whom was a pediatrician. The doctor performed CPR on the victim for an hour. When rangers arrived, the man was still unresponsive. The Park’s medical adviser at the University of Tennessee Medical Center told rangers to discontinue resuscitation effort, given the time that had elapsed.
