A hiking trail is only used the way it was intended if you follow certain steps. The most important thing to consider is personal safety and ease of use for the trail. Other things to consider when planning a hiking outing are the number of people who use the trail, the accommodations available, and the type of supplies needs for the hike. When hiking, it’s best to plan ahead of time to determine that variables such as weather, the difficulty of the trails and time it will take to complete it. Safety should be the number one priority and hiking with a partner is the best policy. It is important to think ahead in order to assure your safety on a hike. You can get maps for trails in public areas, which can help you to set your hiking goals and the speed you plan to go. In addition to maps, consider what you will eat and where you will sleep and make plans for these. Assemble a first aid kit in case there is an accident. The recommended speed is two miles per hour on flat land and an extra half hour per thousand feet on higher altitude. Weather, condition of the trail and the speed of the person are the variables. If a trail is used a lot, you might need reservations especially during the height of the season. That’s true with one of the Grand Canyon’s well-traveled trails. If you want to hike down to the bottom and spend a night there, you must apply for a back-country permit. This is true in most national parks and wildlife sites. Do a search and you’ll discover if you need reservations and how they should be made. You’ll also find out if a tent is required or if you can just bring a sleeping bag or bedroll. While many who like to hike think hiking alone is the ultimate experience, you’ll almost certainly be more safe if you bring a partner with you. That person will be your backup if you get injured or get ill. But the alternative is to hike by yourself if you’ve been at it a while, being sure to leave your itinerary with somebody back home. While planning ahead for a hike is crucial, it is also necessary to be flexible enough to go with the flow of varying factors like weather and unexpected phenomena so that you can enjoy your hike to the fullest. Wilcox estate/farm. 18th century complex of farm buildings. Two small lakes. Four covered pavilions, including the largest pavilion in the Dutchess County park system. A 27-site family campground. Open fields and five-plus miles of hiking trails, with views of Stissing Mountain and the Catskills. Watch out for: A gate about 100 yards in from 199 is locked on weekends, and a sign at the gate says the park is closed on weekends, open 9 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays. Seems a bit odd to me to be open during the week, but closed on weekends, but… Background: The Dutchess County Parks Division has six active facilities comprising more than 943 acres and more than 15 miles of rail trails: 301-acre Bowdoin Park between Wappingers and New Hamburg; 615-acre Wilcox Park east of Milan; the charming 27-acre Quiet Cove Riverfront Park in the Town of Poughkeepsie, on the Hudson north of the Walkway; the 11-mile paved Harlem Valley Rail Trail, from the Wassaic Metro North Station, through Amenia, to Millerton; 1994-vintage Dutchess Stadium, home of the Hudson Valley Renegades; and a new “linear” park, the Dutchess Rail Trail. The first 1.8-mile section of the proposed 11-mile trail opened in 2008 between Route 376 in Hopewell and Lake Walton Road in East Fishkill and the second section, from Morgan Lake in the City of Poughkeepsie to Overocker Road in the Town of Poughkeepsie, opened on July 9, 2009. www.parks@co.dutchess.ny.us .
